A figurative painter, Poca Kim, was born and raised in South Korea where she loved to write poetry. Since she moved to Kansas in 1998, painting became her mode of artistic expression after she studied oil painting at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. Poca also practiced as a registered nurse in Kansas and experienced the healing power of the human body. Soon, that experience integrated into her painting. Her painted figures depict the level of homeostasis which is calm, yet echoes long and leads you beyond what you see.

Poca was chosen as a core artist in the NOTO Art District in Topeka, Kansas in 2014. Since then, she has shown several exhibitions nationally, and one in South Korea. Her works have been featured in regional magazines and on TV, and collected nationally and internationally.

In 2016 Poca moved to Portland, Oregon. And she won the Best of Show Award at the Fall Juried Member Show of Oregon Society of Artists in 2018 and 2019.

Artist Statement

I like to paint figures. I’m fascinated by the human spirit because of its healing power which comes only from the positive will. How special would it be to paint something like that.
